(1940’s Jazz Musical)
Wilshire Ebell Theatre
“One performance Only”
Sunday – October 4, 2009 3:00 P.M.
Award winning Jazz Musical for Best Sound, Best Costumes,
Best Ensemble and Best Director, represents the heyday of
the jazz era when today’s most celebrated Jazz and Blues
artists and beautiful cabaret dancers graced the stage at
L.A.’s famous Club Alabam. Black, White, Latinos….. Ladies
and
gents dressed to the nines came from far and near -
Hollywood, Burbank, Beverly Hills …the East Coast to partake
of the great jazz extravaganza happening on the Avenue.
Music created by such jazz legends as; Ella, Dorothy, Nat,
Billie, Sarah, Duke and, Cab radiated and pulsated up and
down Central Ave. “From 7th and Central to El Sugundo and
Central, this place once known as Mudtown was now known
throughout the country as “Black Hollywood.”
Howlin’ Blues & Dirty Dogs
(The Life of Big Mama Thornton)

A tribute to Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton who was the first
to record “Ain’t Nothin But A Hound Dog” and “Ball & Chain”
which also became huge hits for the late greats Elvis Presley
and Janis Joplin.
The Consortium captures the true essence of this great Blues
legend in all of her simple splendor. This magnificent piece
of literature uncovers how illiteracy and poverty fueled her
failures, and helped to propel her into substance abuse,
leading her into a struggle with heart disease and diabetes
ultimately causing her demise. The audience is taken on an
exciting musical journey throughout Big Mama’s lifetime.

An “old white dude” has a love for “Rap” music, and is
On a serious mission to break into the rap music industry business. Set in Baldwin Hills 1970’s, you’ll love the beautiful “fly girls”, and the antics of Pie Joe, the bumb, as the “old white dude” runs into some very interesting encounters on his first Rap gig at Club Nylon. Loads of drama, comedy, and even a little mystery, with fantastic music and dancing. You definitely don’t want to miss the O W D!!!
Harlem Was EnVogue

A young male’s boredom, present day, ultimately leads him to read a book in which he becomes totally engrossed. This book magically unlocks his desire and inspires him toward a higher learning. This is a story that shifts back and forth from Harlem present day to periods during the Harlem Renaissance, capturing the relativity of receiving an education. It shows the many sacrifices and hardships that were faced, and the formulas that were used and exchanged in an effort to rise above failure and persecution. lt exposes the essence of many great African American literary geniuses and artists such as W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, Charles S. Johnson, Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Bricktop and others. Jazz and religious music, staging and costuming from the Renaissance era is prevalent throughout

A creative outlet for veteran as well as up and coming artists,
poets, musicians and dancers to showcase their talent in an
Apollo Theatre type setting. Awards will be presented.
